More on Matt Smith (The 11th Doctor)

Here is an interesting article from TVGuide about what Billie Piper (who played--plays?--Rose Tyler in the show) thinks about Matt Smith being chosen as the next actor to play the Doctor.

Billie Piper on New Doctor Who: The TARDIS Is in "Good Hands"
Jan 14, 2009 by Matt Mitovich

Billie Piper, who has gone from playing Rose Tyler to turning tricks as Showtime's Call Girl, has a message for Doctor Who fans: Relax.

Asked to weigh in on David Tennant's successor as the BBC series' Time Lord, Piper tells TVGuide.com she is a "big-time" fan of Matt Smith. "I love him."

Addressing the concern that Smith, at 26, is too young to effectively play the good Doctor, Piper notes, "The fans get so concerned about these things, and they should just relax. It's going to be fine. They're in good hands."

In fact, she argues that Smith's scant years will serve him well in the role. "He's a stirring actor, and he has the right energy," she says. "That's what the Doctor's is about, essentially — having that energy that you just can't understand."

Piper pooh-poohs talk that a female — perhaps even herself — was being eyed to helm the TARDIS. "David [Tennant] has joked about me doing it, but ... I don't think the Doctor should be a woman," she says. "It's like going, 'Let's make James Bond a woman.' It's a man's role."

Being a big fan of Smith's, might Piper be tempted to pay a return visit to Whoville? "I don't know," she hedges. "It's hard. Sometimes you just want to leave something behind, and then you see an episode and are like, 'God I really want to do it!' You change your mind all the time."

Also, I watched "Ruby in the Smoke" on dvd last night, and I thought it was surprisingly good. I got it from Netflix because it hadn't seen anything with Matt Smith in it, and I wanted to see him in action, as it were. I think he did a really good job, although with a better script he probably would have been even better. I'm not usually that into mystery books/movies, but I think the fact that it was English and had 2 Doctor Who actors in it is what made it work for me.

Here are some clips of Matt Smith (and Billie Piper) in "Ruby in the Smoke":

Matt Smith Press Clippings

Here is an article from Outpost Gallifrey:

The New Doctor: Press Clippings
January 4, 2009 • Posted By Chuck Foster

Inevitably it was moments after Matt Smith was announced as the Doctor that the press published its first reactions to the casting. As one might expect, the initial reports were mainly based around the BBC Press Release and comments within Doctor Who Confidential itself. However, as the evening/morning progressed further media comment began to emerge, a selection of which are reported below.

Andrew Pettie of the Telegraph commented on how Doctor Who is a 'savvy multi-million-pound brand' and how casting has become a major news event. "... Doctor Who is a success primarily because it is so effortlessly entertaining. This is in large part due to the elasticity of its sci-fi premise. Thanks to the Tardis, the Doctor can travel anywhere in space or time. One moment he's rubbing shoulders with Shakespeare, the next battling aliens far in the future. And the Doctor has a further ace up his sleeve: the ability to change not just the actor playing him, but the nature of his character. ... Which is why Matt Smith is such a bold and exciting choice as the next Doctor. His relative lack of fame shouldn't matter a jot. It's hard to recall now, but before he regenerated as the Doctor, Tennant's most high-profile TV role had been in the BBC3 drama Casanova, written by Davies. Indeed, the key to Tennant's success as the Doctor has been how the crackle of his performances has matched the exuberance of the scripts."

The Independent commented on what fandom might think of the casting: "Smith is not black and he's not a woman, which left some fans wondering why a more daring decision had not been made; but he is the youngest of the 11 actors to have played 'official' versions of the time-travelling Doctor who first stepped out of that battered blue police box called the Tardis in 1963. ... Smith now faces the challenge of winning over two passionate camps: the families who sit together to watch on the sofa on a Saturday night and the hard-core Whovians, some of whom still complain that the lavish effects, high production values and often superb scripts of the modern version are somehow a betrayal of their hero. The Doctor Who Forum online was so busy last night that only veteran contributors could get in. Elsewhere, blogging fans admitted they didn't know much about Smith. 'He's so young,' said one. 'They must be going for the Twilight market.'"

The Sunday Herald also carries opinions on the casting, with Antony Wainer from DWAS commenting: "It's a different choice and I'm delighted by it. But I do think it has taken some people by surprise. The shadow of David Tennant looms large. He was so great, which makes the job for the next person even harder. But here's someone who is younger, and with that youth comes more enthusiasm. It is the only way you could trump Tennant." Also from Glasgow South MP and Who fan Tom Harris: "In the Whovian community there's a huge amount of respect for Steven Moffat because he's been the best writer for the past three or four years. So any people with reservations will give Smith the benefit of the doubt because he was Steven's choice."

Matthew Sweet commented in the Guardian: "The idea of a black or woman Doctor is something we only seem to be able to enjoy as a tease. When Tom Baker left, for example, there was speculation about Joanna Lumley taking over. There is a little part of me that's disappointed the Obama effect hasn't reached Gallifrey yet. This was one of the best kept secrets. Matt Smith has got a fascinating face. It's long and bony, with a commanding jaw. He looks like someone who could have been in Duran Duran. He has a quality of the old man trapped in the young man's body. I suspect he might be a more sensual character than David Tennant, who had no kind of dangerous sexuality about him. There's something Byronic about Matt Smith – he's got the lips for it." The paper also carries a comment by former companion Sophie Aldred: "I'm delighted. I'm so pleased that they haven't chosen a big name but gone with someone who's obviously a good actor but not well known to the public at large. He's got a very interesting face and a fantastic presence. It's going to be a difficult job to follow David Tennant, but I think he'll be a safe pair of hands."

The News of the World decided to lead with Smith's intimate appearance alongside former Doctor Who companion Billie Piper in her show, The Secret Diary of a Call Girl.

Other reports on the casting may be read from: Times(1), Times(2), Telegraph, Mail, Sun, Sunday Mirror, Scotsman, Glasgow Sunday Mail, Wales on Sunday.

MATT SMITH IS THE 11th DOCTOR!!

So I had no idea who Matt Smith was at first, and from one of his promo pics I thought he looked a bit like a serial killer, but I've warmed up to him after watching this:

Here is the announcement from BBC News:

New Doctor actor is youngest ever

Matt Smith has been named as the actor who will take over from David Tennant in Doctor Who - making him the youngest actor to take on the role.
At 26, Smith is three years younger than Peter Davison when he signed up to play the fifth Doctor in 1981.

Smith will first appear on TV screens as the 11th Doctor in 2010.
He was cast over Christmas and will begin filming for the fifth series of Doctor Who in the summer. Tennant is filming four specials in 2009.

Smith was named as Tennant's replacement in Saturday's edition of Doctor Who Confidential on BBC One.

He said: "I feel proud and honoured to have been given this opportunity to join a team of people that has worked so tirelessly to make the show so thrilling.
"David Tennant has made the role his own, brilliantly, with grace, talent and persistent dedication. I hope to learn from the standards set by him.
"The challenge for me is to do justice to the show's illustrious past, my predecessors, and most importantly, to those who watch it. I really cannot wait."
Piers Wenger, head of drama at BBC Wales, said that as soon as he had seen Smith's audition he "knew he was the one".

"It was abundantly clear that he had that 'Doctor-ness' about him," he said. "You are either the Doctor or you are not. It's just the beginning of the journey for Matt.
"With Steven Moffat's scripts and the expertise of the production team in Cardiff behind him, there is no one more perfect to be taking the Tardis to exciting new futures when the series returns in 2010."

Wenger said a broad range of people had been auditioned, but they had not set out to cast the youngest Doctor.

Smith's TV debut was in the 2006 adaptation of Philip Pullman's The Ruby in the Smoke, which starred former Doctor Who companion Billie Piper as Sally Lockhart.
He has also acted opposite Piper in the follow-up, The Shadow in the North, and in ITV2's Secret Diary of a Call Girl.

In 2007, he had a leading role in BBC Two's political drama Party Animals, in which he played a parliamentary researcher.

Smith's stage work has included stints with theatre companies such as the Royal Court and National Theatre. His West End debut was in Swimming With Sharks opposite Christian Slater.

He was born in Northampton in 1982 and studied drama and creative writing at the University of East Anglia.

Creative team
Tennant said in October that he would stand down from the show after filming four special episodes in 2009.

Tennant is recovering from back surgery ahead of filming in 2009
The star is due to begin shooting the first special this month, just weeks after surgery on his back forced him to pull out of a London run of Hamlet.
The last of these special episodes is expected to run in early 2010.
With a new creative team in place for the 2010 series led by executive producers Steven Moffat and Piers Wenger, the casting of the Doctor was the first job to be completed before scripts could be finalised.

Doctor Who began in 1963, and seven actors played the Doctor before the show was dropped in 1989.

After a TV movie in 1996 - starring Paul McGann - the TV series returned in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston in the lead role. Tennant took over the same year.

RSC Bans Sci-Fi Autographs for Hamlet

The Royal Shakespeare Company has set limits on what fans can bring to be signed by David Tennant and Patrick Stewart during the upcoming production of Hamlet. BBC NEWS reports that sci-fi related murchandise will not be allowed for the actors to sign.

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) says only programmes and other Hamlet merchandise can be autographed at the stage door. "Due to the huge amount of interest in the RSC's current production of Hamlet, only Royal Shakespeare Company or production related memorabilia will be signed by members of the company," the RSC said. "It is very flattering that there is so much interest in this production, but the sheer volume of requests means that we need to set some limits which will be as fair as possible for everyone."

Tennant and Stewart are starring in the RSC production at the Courtyard Theatre, in Stratford.

The play opens on 5 August.

***SPOILER ALERT*** DOCTOR WHO FINALE STUFF

From TVScoop:

Doctor Who sensation! Those series four finale rumours in full

I don't know about you, but I'm still reeling from last night's episode of Doctor Who. It was pretty big and daft, but really brilliant. John's review will go into more depth than I dare (go here for all of John and Anna's ace reviews), but really... did you see a regeneration coming? No! of course you didn't, even if you are the Doctor's biggest fan. If you have a quick scout around the interwebby, the rumours about what happened and what will happen have already started spewing forth. As is the way in these things, there are some good juicy rumours, so let's have a look over the jump to see what the fans are saying...

1. There's much more to Donna than meets the eye.
A lot of people think that the scene where Donna's heartbeat(s) are heard (where there multiple heartbeats?!) is very significant indeed.

There was this on Behind The Sofa:
"For all we know, it'll be revealed that Donna was adopted, has always carried a fobwatch around with her that Grandad Cribbins gave her one Christmas which he found on the doorstep with her as a baby and those non-diagetic heartbeats are the first sign of the cockerney regaining her timelord senses before regenerating into River Song."

And, a commenter from Planet Gallifrey said this:
"also harking back to donnas first episode... the racnoss lady did call her the "secret heart" - maybe it was important in this whole 'donna is the most importnat woman in the whole of creation'"

I've always thought Donna was important.

And then there's this:
"I think a potential clue to what may be coming is the mention of Calufrax. The planet was mentioned as one of the 27 that was stolen. It was also "stolen" by The Captain in the original series as part of the Key to Time serial. Seems an awfully big coincidence. That was an episode that featured Romana (Queen of the Timelords or something). Could be a nod to her return. Dona did seem to have a moment of recognition just after Calufrax was mentioned. Could be she's Romana and doesn't yet know it."

Someone else is thinking that Donna could be the regenerated Master. Is she wearing the same ring as the Master? Are those the drums she hears the same as The Master? Is Donna a 'new' Timelord? My head hurts.

2. What or who is The Threefold Man?
Mad Dalek Caan said something about The Threefold Man. Could this mean that the Doctor will 'split' into three Doctors. This commenter on Behind The Sofa speculated:
"Having watched 'Dr Who confidential' previous Doctors who have had dealings with Davros were interviewed including Peter Davidson and Silvester McCoy, Silvester being in his Doctor Who outfit. Could they be both returning as the 'Threefold man'?"

3. The Doctor will regenerate into...
David Morrissey. That's what I read somewhere. David Morrissey is a very good actor (last seen in Cape Wrath). If he does regenerate, it'll be caps off to all involved because of their excellent secret-keeping abilities.

4. The Doctor will not regenerate.
Calm down, everyone. It's all a big hoax. For some reason the regeneration doesn't happen and David Tennant will remain as the Doctor. DT has been seen on the Christmas special set and has said he'll be in the four specials to appear next year.

5. The shot of the Doctor's hand is significant.
Another poster on Planet Gallifrey:
"As far as the regeneration, my guess: Once the Doctor splits in two (the other being what formed from his hand), one of the Doctor's stays behind with Rose in her universe. The real Doctor will return to our universe. That is why we have two Doctors on the beach, as has been spotted. It will be a bittersweet ending, with the real Doctor giving up his love, but Rose and the Doctor still united." [I did actually notice the hand in the jar, like something out of Futurama. And then, when the Doc is lying on the floor of the TARDIS he reaches up with his right hand first... cue long, lingering shot of hand... important? Oh dear, even I've started this speculation thing now!]

Those seem to be the most interesting rumours, but we haven't even touch on the significance of the Osterhagen Key (sp?) and which of the Doctor's companions will buy it. Sets itself up quite nicely for next week, wouldn't you say?

From the Guardian:

A new Who? Who knew?
The Dr Who team has sprung a completely unexpected plot twist on viewers. A coup rarely achieved these net-savvy days
June 30, 2008 12:45 PM

Now, who saw that coming? As the Doctor gasped "I'm regenerating", there must have been countless others up and down the country gasping "No way!" For the end of The Stolen Earth was that rare thing indeed nowadays: the genuine, jaw-dropping, outta-nowhere cliffhanger.

It may be that there's some Dana Scully-esque rational explanation for the whole thing and/or Donna's going to make it all alright somehow and the David Tennant Doctor hasn't really breathed his last; the filming of the Christmas special is going to take some explaining otherwise. But as discussed over on organgrinder and mused upon here, the mere possibility that a new Doctor is imminent (in this reality or an alternate one) is tantalising indeed. Moreover, the coup that the Who production team has pulled off in keeping secret the regeneration, genuine or not, is impressive. Even with closed sets, stringent security and multicoloured photocopies of scripts, it's harder than ever to keep a secret in television. Today, you'd be hard-pushed to keep under wraps the existence - let alone the details - of a cliffhanger and its reveal. Can you imagine the world wondering Who Shot JR? today? I'm not sure I can.

It's the blessing and the curse of the internet that it's easy to find out What Happens Next in your favourite show, especially if it's a US import, as the temptation of foraging for spoilers is often too strong to resist. That said, I managed to avoid reading episode guides to Damages before watching it and I'm doing well to avoid any inside knowledge of Battlestar Galactica's big finish, but it takes some doing.

Not knowing what is about to happen is as rare as hens' teeth but it's a thrilling ignorance. Or is it? Do you find the temptation too enticing to resist? Do you go off trawling for spoilers, Googling for gossip only to feel all soiled once you've found stuff out and spoiled your future viewing? Have we become too keen on instant gratification to contemplate waiting for weeks and months for the resolution of a story? (It's weird to think, is it not, that back in the day, months and months elapsed between US and UK transmission of series.)

Put another way, is the problem not that there are so many spoilers out there - amid the completely unsubstantiated, entirely fabricated gossip, that is - but that it's harder to care about such things now? With programme makers now often complicit in the leaking of vital plot twists and with the art of storytelling seemingly in its death throes, do you care about anything enough to be on tenterhooks about it? Then again, perhaps that's what live shows such as Big Brother and The X Factor, in which the tension is genuine and the ending unwritten, are for.

Finally, and not quite finale-related, from the Daily Mail:

David Morrissey to star in Doctor Who Christmas special featuring deadly CybermenLast updated at 16:30 22 April 2008

Actor David Morrissey appeared on set alongside David Tennant as the pair filmed the next Doctor Who Christmas special.

Dozens of fans gathered in the grounds of Gloucester Cathedral to catch a glimpse of the stars of the popular BBC sci-fi show.

David Morrissey filming the Christmas special of Dr Who in Gloucester on Monday

David Tenant, the 10th Doctor, was seen with the cast in period costume engulfed in a fake snow storm on the early evening shoot

College Green was covered with artificial snow for a scene filmed on Monday, in which mourners in Victorian costume marched in front of a horse-drawn cart carrying a coffin.

Tennant was dressed in the Doctor's trademark ankle-length brown coat, while Morrissey was in kitted out in full period garb - a tan knee-length jacket and red waistcoat.

It is unclear who is in the coffin ? but at one point Tennant stands by with a grim expression and watches the hearse pass him.

Secrecy surrounds the storyline, but it's believed to feature the Cybermen - the Doctor's deadliest enemies

Who's that on the phone? An extra takes time out and, right, David Tennant

A security guard sat in front of the Tardis, which was tucked down a nearby alleyway, covered by a white sheet.

Tennant waved to the crowds as the crew prepared the intricate set and covered the surrounding historic buildings with fake snow.

Secrecy surrounds the Christmas episode's storyline, but it's believed to feature the Cybermen - the Doctor's deadliest enemies.

Gloucester is often used as a film location because of its historic buildings ? the Harry Potter films have been shot in the cathedral.

Doctor Who Stuff

First, a teaser video for tomorrow nights episode (Part 1 of the season finale):

And some news:

Doctor Who star set to get £1.3m to stay

The BBC is rumoured to be ready to pay David Tennant a massive £1.3 million to carry on as Doctor Who.

The Bathgate-born actor is expected to be offered a new deal worth up to £100,000 per episode.

And he could also be offered other drama projects in a bid to keep him on board.

BBC bosses are desperate to stop the 37-year-old from quitting the show, which attracts up to eight million viewers.

One senior BBC source was quoted saying: "Everyone assumes David is quitting but that's not the case. We're hoping he will be back.

"The situation as it stands is that no deal has been discussed yet for the next series of Doctor Who. That, however, is about to change.

"David is brilliant in the role and naturally we hope he will continue. We're not considering anyone else at this time."

Tennant said: "I've been asked when I'm quitting since the first day I took the part. I've not quit – I've just not been offered another deal yet."

The Fun Fun Times for Me!!

So after the fiasco that was the Foals concert, this past weekend actually turned out to be pretty fun.

Thursday night, as evidenced by my last few posts, was the SSLYBY show, which was a lot of fun.

Friday was mostly spent hanging out around the house. I got Jonathan's car washed, and then we all piled in the van to go pick him up from BWI. After getting slightly lost, we went out to Il Porto, which is one of my favorite restaurants that we hadn't been to in a while.

Saturday we celebrated my Mom's birthday by going to the Textile Museum in Washington, DC. It was actually pretty fun. They had an exhibit about Indigo and how it is used as a dye, and they had lots of cool textiles hanging up. They also had a trunk show going on with lots of cool quilts w/modern designs on them.

After that we got some bubble tea and some fried ice cream (delicious!) and then walked along Embassy Row/Mass. Ave until about 5pm. All of the embassies and residences were beautiful/interesting and it was beautiful outside: good weather, lots of trees, etc.

After that we went out to dinner at India Palace, where we bumped into Ms. Amberg, of all people! She was me & Jonathan's compsci teacher in High School, and she's rediculously nice. We both hadn't seen or talked to her in years, so it was nice to catch up.

Then Jonathan went into DC to hang out with some of his friends, so my parents and I watched some Doctor Who (Season 3, Ep 1) . . . they're a little behind, but I couldn't resist watching it with them.

Sunday I just hung out around the house and then went to the Seder at my church at around 6:30. We're not Jewish (we're Episcopalian), but since my dad grew up Jewish, we've been known to do a passover seder at our church. We hadn't had one in several years, though, so it was really fun, especially since Jonathan was there. The only problem was that I'm trying not to eat very much meat anymore, and the only other thing they had there was salad (which I hate) and bread (which I ate). The plethora of desserts more than made up for the lack of diversity in the main course, however.

After that, Jonathan went to Baltimore to meet up with some friends and my parents and I watched another episode of Doctor Who (Season 4, Episode 2 -- The Shakespeare Code). That episode is quite fun for me b/c not only do I love Shakespeare, I also love Harry Potter, which they mention 3x. Its making me want to reread the 7th book b/c I've only read it once, the day it came out. I've just been so bummed about HP being over that I haven't been able to make myself read it again, even though deep down I want to...*sigh*. I brought it with me to work today, just in case.

So today I'm doing day shift, which hasn't been too busy, and then I'm going to have dinner with my family b/c today is my Mom's birthday. Then I'm driving Jonathan to Arlington to meet up w/some of his coworkers before a conference that they're going to starting tomorrow. After that I'm probably going to watch this past Saturday's episdoe of Doctor Who, which I am rather looking forward to!

Tomorrow night I'm seeing Teitur @ Jammin' Java and Thursday is HANSON!!!!

More to come when I think of something interesting to say :O)
