Crazy Noel-age :OP

Ahh, Noel...

Here's an interview thingy from the Observer on May 25:

This much I know
Noel Fielding, comedian, 35, London

Interview Eva Wiseman
Sunday May 25, 2008
The Observer

Fame is a bit Nietzschean. For everything good, something bad happens to you, so you have to sort of be careful.

My mum and dad are quite hippyish, so I'm pretty naive. I take everyone at face value.

When you're famous you can't go to Topshop. Even when I disguise myself in a moustache, baseball cap, sunglasses - the full Madonna kit - it doesn't work: my stupid face is too big.

The more people drink, the more they want from you. At 9 o'clock people want a photo, at 10 o'clock they want you to write them an essay, and at 1 in the morning, they want you to speak to their nan, who named a dog after you - which is a true story.

Gay people are all like Superman. You have to be quite strong to be gay - or to be different in any way. You build special muscles.

I'm strong, like a flea. A really powerful flea.

The more glam you look and the more you believe your own hype, the more likely you are to get your head cut off. I learned that when I saw a dragonfly being decapitated by ants.

Some people have a fear of being on stage. I have a fear of coming off it.

Stand-up is like school. When you're not very good, you're a supply teacher and the kids will run riot. Bill Hicks was a headmaster; I'm getting up to being maybe a part-time French teacher.

Trousers can never be too tight. You have to go through a couple of days of pain, then everything stretches out.

I visited a friend in Leicester recently. It was 4am, and we all ran round in a circle, six of us. It's the most fun I've had since I was seven. And I thought: it's not about drink, or drugs, or fancy clubs. It's about running around in your socks, changing direction! In a front room in Leicester.

There's not enough psychedelic stuff on TV. I want the world to be a bit weirder than it is. I hate reality, so I hate reality TV. But I love Columbo

We're attracted to dark stuff as human beings. I know it's wrong, but I love guns.

When I was 14, I saw someone getting their face and wrists slashed with a knife in a pub in Catford. Nobody lifted a finger. That's when I realised that violence wasn't funny. At all.

I never did that badly with women when I wasn't on telly, but it's a bit out of control now. Women try it on with me more than I'm comfortable with. It's strange, because I think I look like a troll wearing a woman's wig backwards.

I'm a mischievous drunk. I hate the kind of drunks that you have to run away from when you see that look in their eyes like they're planning to kill you and wear your skin as a leisure suit.

I like what Little Britain is doing, but when you get as popular as that, it becomes something else other than comedy, like bread or oranges or wallpaper.

With the Boosh we take something like a merman and give him a vagina and make him look a bit like Rick James and get him to play the funk. That's what we do.

It's important to keep the chain of influences going. Someone you admire likes Bob Dylan, who likes Woody Guthrie... It's important, otherwise people just disappear.

I don't have back-to-front ram's legs, but I feel like I have. All of my comedy stems from the fact that I feel like I'm half-man, half-animal. A man is funny, but a man with antlers is hilarious. And I'm going to see this experiment through to the end.

· An exhibition of Noel Fielding's art is at Maison Bertaux, 28 Greek Street, London W1 (07985 395 079) until 21 June

Also...Noel Fielding playing football!! Huzzah!

And a HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY to Noel Fielding, who turned 35 on the 21st . . . I forgot to blog about it . . . oops!

More Mighty Boosh Festival-ness!!

Woo!! More Boosh Festival Info/Links/Rumours!!

Here is the Official Mighty Boosh Festival Site

From which I glean this gem:

Note that ROBOTS IN DISGUISE are playing! Score!!!

Robots in Disguise --> "Turn It Up"

Here are the OFFICIAL FACEBOOK PAGE and OFFICIAL MYSPACE PAGE.

In slightly less official news:

Thursday, 29 May 2008

...Meanwhile, Babyshambles have pulled out The Mighty Boosh Festival on 5 July because Pete’s rival Johnny Borrell and his band Razorlight are on the bill.

‘Pete detests Johnny with every fibre of his being,’ a source tells The Sun. ‘He was keen to perform because he’s a huge fan of the Boosh. But when he discovered that Johnny was going to be there, he bottled it.’

The pair fell out at the Leeds Festival in 2005.

First of all, since when were Babyshambles gonna be at the fest?? Second, since when are Razorlight on the bill? I know there have been rumours of them being on the bill, but there hasn't been anything official....hmmmm.

***UPDATE*** Har Mar Superstar has also been added to the lineup.

***ANGRY UPDATE*** Har Mar Superstar has REPLACED Robots in Disguise, who will no longer be appearing....GRRRRRR!!!!!!!

Damn You, Exchange Rate!!!

I really want THIS TSHIRT, designed by Noel Fielding, but guess what it costs! . . . 25 quid for the shirt and 10 quid for international shipping. That equals like 70 bucks!!!

And as much as I love Noel Fielding, I find that to be a bit ridiculous.

Flexing My Minimal Artistic Muscles

I combined a black and white rendering of the Obama "Hope" poster with a grayscale rendering of Mount Rushmore to create this beauty:

Mount Rushmore the way it should be. :OP

Enjoy!!

And here's another picture that I had nothing to do with, but I enjoy nonetheless:

Please, Oh Please, Let the Rumours Be True

The Sun is not exactly the most reliable newssource, but I really want this article to be true (because I heart Razorlight)!

According to an article in the Sun:

NOEL FIELDING has invited his nemesis JAMIE HINCE to perform at THE MIGHTY BOOSH festival.

THE KILLS have been added to the bill of the madcap bash at The Hop Farm in Kent on July 5 — being organised by Noel and comedy partner JULIAN BARRATT.

There’s little love lost between Jamie and Noel as KATE MOSS’s other half reckons the funnyman is a bad influence on his bandmate ALISON MOSSHART.

But Noel has thrown caution to the wind and invited the group to play.

Noel and Julian have had very little time to sort out the event but they seem to have pulled it off.

Most acts confirm festival appearances more than six months in advance and Noel was seriously concerned that they wouldn’t be able to fill the bill.

He said: “I was beginning to think ‘Oh c***’ but it’s looking good now.”

GARY NUMAN, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE and RAZORLIGHT have all confirmed they want a piece of the psychedelic action.

With Boosh character Naboo reading palms and the likes of PEACHES and PIXIE GELDOF swanning about, it’ll be the real deal.

And Noel is pinning his hopes on a singalong with legendary Brit singer and composer Gary for the grand finale.

He said: “I’m going to try and do a duet with Gary. That would be a dream.

“Julian loves him too and would be well up for it.”

Noel is a top bloke and the event will be a triumph.

Numan on stage with The Boosh? I’d pay just to see that.

Of course, RatM confirmed they AREN'T going to be playing . . . lets hope that Razorlight doesn't do the same.

NASA's Pheonix Lander

In case you haven't heard, the Phoenix Lander successfully landed near the North Pole of Mars on Sunday! Its going to dig through the ice to hopefully find signs of live or at least chemical compounds that suggest life.

Whats really cool is that the MRO (Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter) actually captured an image of the Phoenix Lander parachuting through Mars' atmosphere!!

According to NASA's website:

NASA's Mars Phoenix Lander can be seen parachuting down to Mars, in this image captured by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. This is the first time that a spacecraft has imaged the final descent of another spacecraft onto a planetary body.

From a distance of about 310 kilometers (193 miles) above the surface of the Red Planet, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter pointed its HiRISE obliquely toward Phoenix shortly after it opened its parachute while descending through the Martian atmosphere. The image reveals an apparent 10-meter-wide (30-foot-wide) parachute fully inflated. The bright pixels below the parachute show a dangling Phoenix. The image faintly detects the chords attaching the backshell and parachute. The surroundings look dark, but correspond to the fully illuminated Martian surface, which is much darker than the parachute and backshell.

Phoenix released its parachute at an altitude of about 12.6 kilometers (7.8 miles) and a velocity of 1.7 times the speed of sound.

The HiRISE acquired this image on May 25, 2008, at 4:36 p.m. Pacific Time (7:36 p.m. Eastern Time). It is a highly oblique view of the Martian surface, 26 degrees above the horizon, or 64 degrees from the normal straight-down imaging of Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The image has a scale of 0.76 meters per pixel.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Denver, is the prime contractor for the project and built the spacecraft. The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment is operated by the University of Arizona, Tucson, and the instrument was built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., Boulder, Colo.

NASA/JPL-Caltech/University of Arizona

I love that one of the first things a lander does upon landing is to take a picture of one of its feet on the surface! I think its so adorable! (And yes, I do have an abnormal attachment to inanimate objects!)

"Oooh, look!! It's my foot!! Check it out! I'm on Mars!"

After that, it takes pictures of the landscape . . . enjoy!

As I'm not very busy this weekend, I'm gonna start making my way through the list I posted a few posts ago. I'll post more if I like the band then if I don't, obviously, but I'll post something for each of the ones I check out . . . enjoy!

I'm not a huge fan of several of their songs/videos, but they seem weird, which makes me like them just a little bit more. They do sort of electro-rock. I DO, however, love their song "Epic Last Song," and I think the video for it is fantastic. They put pictures of the band members' faces on these little dolls and make it look like they're playing the normal-sized instruments . . . pretty sweet!

I also like their song "Dawn of the Dead," which doesn't appear to have an official video, but you can hear it here:

British Sea Power @ Black Cat -- Thursday, May 8, 2008

This past Thursday I went to see the British band British Sea Power at the Black Cat in Washington, DC. I went as a part of the DC Area Britpop Meetup, even though only 2 of us actually came to the show (me & Jeremy).

The two openers weren't exactly my style. The first opener's songs weren't exactly my style, but he accompanied some of them with hand-drawn comics illustrating what he said, and that was rather amusing.

The second opener was the Rosebuds (I think that's what they're called), and they weren't too bad. They were playing much louder than they needed to, especially the bass section on the keyboards. Their songs weren't bad, but all the instruments were jumbled together so much that I couldn't really appreciate them. I prefer songs that have more "breathing room" in them, if that makes any sense whatsoever.

After that, British Sea Power came on. I had heard good things about them so I bought their cd and a ticket to their show, but I hadn't listened to the cd as much as I wanted to by the day of the show. So I wasn't sure exactly what to expect, but they were GREAT! They played really well and the songs sounded even better live than they did on the cd ("Do You Like Rock Music?"). They brought some foliage out and put it up all over the stage (attached to amps, mics, etc), which was awesome. I'm pretty sure they pilfered it from some local park. Unfortunately, in order to make sure I could reclaim my (aka Jonathan's) car from the parking garage, I had to leave before the last 1 or 2 songs. While I was still there, though, I was front row center, so I got some great pictures!

I highly recommend British Sea Power!!! You can listen to their music HERE.

Here are some of the best pictures from the show:

Why Yesterday Was the Best Day EVER!!

So yesterday was pretty much the best day ever because HANSON(!!!) came to the venue where I work, the State Theatre in Falls Church, VA.

I showed up around 2 and helped out in the box a little before the AIDS/Poverty Awareness/Action Walk that Hanson does before every show (it is The Walk Tour, after all). The cool part is that I got to help Courtney lead them around the route that she planned out for the walk (it was 1 mile that started and ended at the venue).

So I got to meet them before we headed out for the walk, which was SO COOL! I've been a fan of theirs for 11 years, and this is the first time I've ever gotten to meet them. They're all really nice and GORGEOUS!

The walk was a lot of fun. It was gorgeous outside and there were a lot of people there who were really enthusiastic about not only Hanson, but the cause itself. They ask you to walk barefoot (its basically a symbolic sacrifice). I did, of course, and it didn't hurt too bad at the time, but now I'm paying for it. There was a park along the route w/a playground set, so we stopped there and Hanson got on top of the playground to give their speech. I have the whole thing on videotape, but since its about 13 minutes long, I haven't been able to find a way to share it online yet. The speech was actually quite inspiring, I thought. After that, we walked the rest of the way back to the theatre.

I helped Courtney out in the box office a little bit more, and then she let me go watch them when they started doing soundcheck (b/c Courtney is the coolest person EVER!). They sounded amazing, and they practiced a few songs that they didn't even play during the actual show. Plus, it was so nice to hear their music in its "natural" state, without everyone screaming & singing along.

After that I worked in box a little bit more, and then went to stand at the front (after the meet & greeters went in, b/c it only seemed fair). So I ended up being front row, which was AMAZING!! Most of the girls around me were pretty nice, but they were frustrated about being pushed around by other people. I also talked to the CSC security guard who was standing near me, and he was really nice as well.

Then the show started: I'm not a huge fan of Kate Voegle, I find her voice slightly annoying and her songs sounded too busy (I prefer songs where each instrument has a separate and important part, not where they're all jumbled together). She only played for 30 mins and then SK6ers came on. I had never seen them live before, but I have one of their cds. They were really good, but I think I would have enjoyed them more if I wasn't so tired.

Then Hanson came on. They were AMAZING!! Not that I wasn't expecting that, because I've seen them 5 times before and they were nothing short of amazing any of those times. This one may have topped the others, though. They played all the songs perfectly, and they played a lot of my favorite songs. Ike even did a solo and they did one song acapella. It was nothing short of spectacular. I chose not to take my camera in to the show b/c the camera policy kept changing (b/w no cameras, no flash, no flash and only for the first 3 songs, etc). In the end, I decided I wouldn't worry about it and I'd just enjoy the show. I think I made the right decision :O)

After the show, they cleared everybody out into the lobby, but me and some of the other people who work there stayed behind and chatted. I was tempted to have something to drink, but I decided not to because I needed to drive home soon and I had an empty stomach. It was really nice getting to talk to people in a not-quite-qork environment.

After that I went outside near the tour bus where people were waiting for autographs/pictures because I had called Shelley to try and meet up with her and thats where she said she was. Once I found her we waited in line and got a picture with Zac!! (My new favorite picture ever!!) -->

I also got Zac and Taylor to sign my ticket. Which I didn't need (I had bought it before I started working there), so I had sold it to Shelley's friend, who was nice enough to give it back to me to get it signed (she was getting a bag signed). Its now magnetic-clipped to my dry-erase board. It makes me very happy inside.

After they got onto the bus, Shelley was nice enough to give me a ride to my car, which I had had to park on a random side street sorta far away. I didn't get home until 3am, but when I got home there was Chinese food waiting for me!! The perfect end to a pretty much perfect day.

So since I had to get up to do day box today, I'm pretty exhausted and sore, but it was completely worth it!!

Teitur Concert -- Tuesday, April 29, 2008

Tuesday night I went to Jammin' Java for Teitur's "The Singer" CD release party.

The openers were Helgi, who is a member of his band, and a band called Old Springs Pike.

Helgi's music was somewhat in the same vein as Teitur's and he has a great voice. He seemed really nice as well. He is from Iceland, and his sister was also in Teitur's band.

Old Springs Pike were really, really good. They played sort of folksy rock. I was bummed that they didn't have any cds to sell (their EP comes out in a couple of months), because I definately would have bought one. They even did a Beatles cover!!

It was amusing that the entire crowd was sitting down in a semi-circle in front of the stage through both openers, and even through the first few songs of Teitur's set.

His set was AMAZING! He's a phenomenal songwriter and hes got an amazing voice. They played all of the songs from his new cd, "The Singer." They were right up my alley. The album is very theatrical. Some of it is somewhat depressing, some of it is upbeat, but all of the songs are beautiful. He also played "Louis Louis", "Josephine" and "I Was Just Thinking" which are some of my favorite songs of his. I was blown away by his solo acapella rendition of "The Singer."

After the show, I bought Helgi's cd and Teitur's new cd, and then got them both to sign their respective cds. I even got a picture with Teitur, which I love, even though I look slightly bald and he looks slightly deceased.
